Immigration, a Humble Perspective

First things first, I am not stating I have the answer to our illegal immigration problem. My upbringing was simple and surrounded with fellow Americans in a small community. However, I spent many years traveling the United States and I feel I have a decent understanding about the problem at hand.

Immigrants are very necessary to our nation. The current residents of America are producing fewer children than people are dieing and immigration fills this gap, along with many others. Our nation, like many others, was created through immigration and it helped us become the nation we are today. Moreover, my relatives immigrated here from Scotland.

However, I don't consider illegal aliens immigrants to this country. Illegal aliens are suggesting, in my opinion, our rules do not apply to them; our rules can be broken when a person considers the current laws immoral or unfair. Entering a country illegally is a crime, regardless of your personal beliefs, morals, and ideals. Our society established a standard and this standard must be upheld by all people found within our lands and jurisdiction.

There are many argumentative opinions held by illegal aliens and I don't have the space or time to discuss them in this blog. The argument I am going to cover is, "The pursuit of freedom and happiness is not a crime; murder is a crime." I see this argument all over the web, and I have many problems with this comparative fallacy. First, a criminal is involving or being or having the nature of a crime; "a criminal offense"; "criminal abuse"; "felonious intent." Illegal aliens are criminals. Second, people residing out of this country, in general, are aware we have laws prohibiting unauthorized entry in our country. They know this because the country they are coming from, will have similar laws. Hence the PASSPORTS we are required to carry ON OUR PERSON! Illegal aliens conduct an opportunity cost analysis before entering our country whether it is physically or mentally, and they are choosing to risk fines and imprisonment. Why are we the bad guys for upholding our current laws. We did not break the law; we are enforcing it. Will the illegal aliens want the law to work for them when someone breaks into THEIR HOUSE? Finally, thousands of immigrants are entering this country LEGALLY each year, and it is greatly appreciated. Yes the process is long, expensive, and frustrating, but this country is worth it. Moreover, it is the system we created and it must be followed. Illegal entry is a slap in the face to those entering legally.

Our country is far from perfect but I consider it to be the greatest country on earth. We each pay a price to live in a free country. Some pay more than others, but a price must be paid. There is no such thing as a free lunch! Someone ends up with the bill, and in this case our honest tax payers are the provider.

There are so many different avenues one can walk down on this subject so I will keep my comment simple. These people are criminals. Its very simple. When a society stops being a society that adheres to the law and instead bends, infringes, or breaks the law out of feel good pity the criminal emotion, that society no longer has a concrete foundation to stand on. Rationalizing the law for certain people and behavior is like trusting your house to the proverbial sand, your society will fall. And ours is. Yes we need legal immigration. With the raging debates of fixing healthcare and unemployment, the two foxes in our hen house right now, the number one place to start for both of those is deporting illegal aliens. It has been done in the past in this country by presidents with balls and an actual care for the American people. Lets do it again.

so, should we lock them up? Should we ship them all home? What would be the cost of such action? Are there other ways to handle the situtation? Just playing the Devil's advocate for awhile here to foster a debate. What exactly is wrong with amnesty? I am tempted to favor it because it gives a clean slate to start from. Imagine a one-time amnesty where we grant all people living illegally amnesty and then actually start border protection from that point. Perhaps it could really be a benefit to us.

I would like agree with you; I would like to collect all the stray puppies in the world and give them a place to live..

The one time amnesty idea was done in 1986. It was agreed upon as the one time deal, yet we have granted amnesty seven other times since then. Amnesty is not the answer. It shows our laws can be walked on and ignored if we don't agree with them. Should we pardon all the child molesters in prison? I am sure they learned their lesson and will want to obey all of the OTHER laws. (I do not associate illegal aliens with child molesters)

Arizona is a shinning example of the steps that can be taken. We shouldn't create an environment for illegal aliens that is comfortable. If they are going to break the law, they need to be treated like someone with a bench warrant. It is expensive to imprison and send them back to their own country. But isn't it more expensive to house, cloth, feed, and medical treat every illegal that enters and stays in our country?
